What is the current status of Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train project?

India's first high-speed rail line, the 508-km-long Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, is progressing steadily under the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL), with financial and technical support from the Japanese government.

Stations & Route:

The corridor will span three regions—Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli—featuring 12 stations: Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

Project Cost & Funding:

The total estimated cost of the project is ₹1.08 lakh crore. Of this, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is funding ₹88,000 crore (81%), while the remaining ₹20,000 crore is contributed by the Indian Railways (50%) and the state governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat (25% each). As of June 30, 2025, ₹78,839 crore has already been spent.

Construction & Civil Work Status:

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha that out of 28 tender packages, 24 have been awarded, and all major civil contracts are in place. The construction of the 21-km undersea tunnel is underway. So far:

392 km of piers have been built

329 km of girders cast

308 km of girders launched

Completion Timeline:

The Gujarat section between Vapi and Sabarmati is scheduled for completion by December 2027. The entire stretch, including the Maharashtra leg, is expected to be completed by December 2029, subject to the complexities and technological challenges inherent in the project.
