"Sikh families sought refuge." PM Modi on the "massacre of 1984" and the RSS
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) centennial celebrations in New Delhi on Wednesday, thanking the swayamsevaks for their assistance to Sikhs during the 1984 riots. During the Sikh massacre in 1984, a large number of Sikh families sought safety in the houses of RSS swayamsevaks, who were either volunteers or members. The swayamsevaks are like this," he remarked.
The prime minister added that during his visit to Nagpur, former President Pranab Mukherjee was "strongly influenced by the simplicity and dedication of the RSS." Swayamsevaks were the first to arrive and deliver relief during the floods in Punjab and the disasters that afflicted Himachal, Uttarakhand, and Wayanad. During the COVID pandemic, the world witnessed the bravery and service of the RSS," he continued.
Following the murder of then-prime minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards, anti-Sikh riots erupted in 1984. The riots claimed thousands of Sikh lives, with Delhi and Kanpur suffering the most damage. In Delhi and other Indian cities, mobs committed heinous assaults, murders, and burning.
