According to a former RBI deputy governor, Trump's tariffs on India could be a good thing.

According to former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) deputy governor Viral Acharya, US President Donald Trump's tariffs on Indian imports could not be all bad news because they would pressure the Indian government to reduce trade obstacles, promoting competitiveness and growth.

In a Bloomberg interview, Acharya stated that Indian companies will have to improve their standards and contend with international competitors. He went on to say that this will also result in more manufacturing and better jobs. Acharya is currently the NYU Stern School of Business's director of doctorate education. From 2017 to 2019, he served as the deputy governor of the RBI.

Trump has threatened to raise import taxes to the same amount as a trading partner's duties on American goods by imposing reciprocal tariffs on nations starting April 2, 2025.
