3 Indians held hostage in Mali by Al-Qaeda-linked militants: Key details.

India Voices Deep Concern After Three Nationals Abducted in Mali

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement late Wednesday expressing “deep concern” over the abduction of three Indian nationals working at the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, Republic of Mali. The ministry emphasized that the safety and welfare of Indian citizens abroad is a top priority for the Government of India.

The MEA urged all Indian nationals residing in Mali to exercise "utmost caution, remain vigilant, and stay in regular contact with the Indian Embassy in Bamako for updates and assistance."

What Happened in Mali?

On July 1, 2025, a group of armed attackers stormed the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes and forcibly abducted three Indian employees during a coordinated assault on the premises. No group has officially claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, according to PTI. However, the al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on Malian military posts in western and central regions on the same day.

The MEA confirmed that several military and government facilities across Mali were targeted during these coordinated terrorist attacks, which coincided with the incident at the factory.

India’s Response

In response to the kidnapping, India has called upon the Malian government to take swift and effective measures to secure the safe and prompt release of the abducted individuals.

“Senior officials of the Ministry are closely monitoring the evolving situation and remain engaged at various levels to facilitate the safe and early release of the Indian nationals,” the statement said.

The Indian Embassy in Bamako is actively coordinating with Malian authorities, local security forces, and the management of Diamond Cement Factory. The mission is also maintaining communication with the families of the abducted individuals, providing them with regular updates.

India continues to work through diplomatic and official channels to ensure the safe return of its citizens as concerns grow over the deteriorating security environment in Mali.
