Live updates on landslides in Darjeeling: 20 dead; flood warning in Bengal due to dam overflow in Bhutan

Live updates on landslides in Darjeeling: Massive landslides caused by Saturday's heavy rainfall in West Bengal's Darjeeling district killed at least 20 people, including seven children, according to officials. But according to Rajesh Kumar Yadav, DG & IG of North Bengal Police, who visited the impacted areas, things are starting to stabilize.

Homes were destroyed, roads were damaged, and access to a number of isolated locations was shut off by the landslides. Deaths were recorded from a number of places, including Sarsaly, Jasbirgaon, Mirik Basti, Dhar Gaon (Mechi), Nagrakata, and the Mirik Lake area, according to records collated by the NDRF and the district administration.

In the meantime, a technical malfunction caused Bhutan's Tala Hydropower Dam to start overflowing, putting North Bengal officials on high alert. Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, voiced her profound concern over the extreme flooding that has occurred in both North and South Bengal. According to her, "North Bengal experienced an unexpected rainfall of over 300 mm in 12 hours last night, and at the same time, there was an excessive flow of water into the Sankosh River and a general flow of river waters from Bhutan and Sikkim." Disasters resulted from this.
