Delhi's "red lines" in response to Trump's aggressive tariffs

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated on Sunday that any finalized agreement must meet New Delhi's red lines, even though much of the present problems in India-US relations are related to the inability to come to an agreement on trade. At a discussion on "Shaping Foreign Policy in Turbulent Times" at the Kautilya Economic Enclave in New Delhi, Jaishankar stated that while an understanding of trade is essential because the US is the world's largest market, the two nations' differences must be viewed proportionately because some aspects of their bilateral relationship are continuing as "business as usual."

The strategic ramifications of the world's unparalleled developments, such as the leveraging of production, supply chains, trade, data, and connectivity, as well as India's strategy for adapting to these changes by strengthening its manufacturing and national might, were the main topics of Jaishankar's speech.

Jaishankar stated that the majority of the problems in the relationship are related to the inability to reach a trade agreement, against the backdrop of tensions in India-US relations not seen in over 20 years. He said this in response to queries from the crowd, the moderator, and former revenue secretary NK Singh.
