Avalanche in Uttarakhand: 4 workers killed, 46 rescued; search continues for 5 in inclement weather
At least four laborers perished in the high-altitude village of Mana in the Chamoli region of Uttarakhand after becoming buried beneath an avalanche. The avalanche trapped 55 employees of the Border Roads Organization on Friday. Five workers are still being sought after 50 were pulled out of the snow.
According to the Army, the workers were buried inside eight containers and a shed when the avalanche struck the BRO camp on Friday between 5:30 and 6 a.m. In a desperate attempt to save the stranded workers, rescue crews have since had to contend with dangerous terrain, blinding blizzard, and cold temperatures.
55 personnel were trapped in the camp when a huge avalanche struck; two of them were on leave. In the face of snow and cold temperatures, the Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (IRBP) forces stationed there promptly began the rescue efforts, according to district magistrate Sandeep Tiwari of Chamoli.
