Cong on the new Income Tax Bill: "This is surveillance; there is no warrant or notice."
On February 13, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Income Tax Bill to Parliament. A Select Committee is reviewing the bill.
On Thursday, the Congress said that the new income-tax law makes India a "surveillance state" by giving tax authorities access to every taxpayer's bank account, social media accounts, and email.
Congress posted on its official X handle: "They used Pegasus to spy on us. They will now completely take away our personal life. The government is covertly granting tax authorities the authority to access your digital life under the new income tax law signed into law by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. You can be deprived of your privacy with just suspicion, no notice, no warrant. It's surveillance. And we all have to be adamantly against it."
