Tamil Nadu rupee symbol row reaches assembly, BJP walks out during Budget session

In protest of the DMK government's decision to replace the rupee symbol, the Bharatiya Janata Party and other opposition parties left the Tamil Nadu assembly during the state budget 2025–2026.

Vanathi Srinivasan, a BJP MLA, protested by wearing a black outfit during the session before leaving. "The walkout is on two issues," she stated. First, a statement regarding the financial irregularities of many thousands of crores was released by the ED. The legitimacy of this government's budget presentation today has been undermined.

She commented on the political commotion surrounding Chief Minister MK Stalin's intention to switch the rupee symbol to the Tamil alphabet, saying, "The CM posted yesterday that the rupee symbol was being removed. He used the Tamil sign with great specificity. We use the Tamil emblem, of course, but he is deliberately and deliberately denigrating the national symbol. That is what we are worried about.
